Missionaries

You might think living in China is so incredibly different than living in North America and you would be correct in that assumption, but only about ten percent of the time. Our life in China takes on a very normal appearance when compared to a normal life in North America. I use normal loosely because I am not sure if there is such a thing as a normal life.

So, what is different? We don not have a proliferation of churches; the street corners are largely barren of large, brick, well-constructed buildings. Religion, Christianity particularly, is taking off to the extent that I heard lately the Chinese government is considering an experimental Christian community where, I am assuming, independent churches will be allowed. This is in contrast to the government sanctioned three-self church, which is the legal Chinese Christian church, but often heretical.

What Fan Fan and I do

We are currently employed as a couple with Chengdu International School. Fan Fan is not working this year due to the pregnancy and birth of Naia, our first daughter. However she remains active meeting friends that study the Word with her on a regular basis. I am in the fourth year of teaching for Chengdu International School. I am also learning how to be a new father. For the past year now I have also been working on my Masters degree online through Indiana Wesleyan University and coaching our high school mens basketball team.

The international school where I am teaching is part of a much larger organization, which is involved in various areas of the economic and social development of China. The international school, of which there are five, were started over 20 years ago to supply a direct need to the growing international community, particularly Christian workers that needed more time to spend in the community and were unable because of their childrens educational needs. Our companys president responded to a call to begin International School of China years ago with the ulterior motive of influencing the influencers of society (managers of major multinational companies, diplomats) through their children.

Although I personally do not do near as much community outreach as I would like, I do have a calling here which allows others to accomplish more. That is part of the mission of the international school. As a school we are able to do a lot of outreach with the local staff. Part of the vision is to train up enough teachers that are followers to start a Chinese school that is entirely staffed with local believers.

As per request of a few different people, I've put together some greeting cards with photos I've taken. They include cards that could be used for the upcoming holidays...

For those of you wondering what I'm up to.... I have been in Michigan since early September. It has been great to spend time with family/friends and get some rest. I am heading out to Hawaii to take photos at the "Pipemasters" Surf Contest in December and looking forward to that.

The video/book project is coming along. We are near completion with a presentable packet (with full description/vision/mission for the project) for potential sponsors/donors and other interested parties. I will send that out upon completion.
